Students from five tribal schools with Redd Zone educational hatcheries

Outreach Programs

Redd Zone has been engaged with educational programs since its inception. Designing and installing the first ever hatchery operating solely on rainwater turned a program in Oregon from a ten percent survival of eggs to fed fry to nearly ninety percent. From that first incursion at the Warrenton High School in Oregon Redd Zone has expanded to support five additional schools in Washington State. Many students are hands-on learners and thrive on being challenged in real life situations. Below are some of the programs we have had the privilege to be participants. Redd Zone frequently donates equipment and time to further the education of students in fisheries. From Southern Idaho Community College to Neah Bay High School at Cape Flattery on the northwest tip of Washington and several points in between, Redd Zone is helping make a difference with the next generation.

Redd Zone also supports other projects such as an eyed egg out planting research program at Coos Bay, Oregon. Using the Salmon Egg Planting Device (coined “the Redd Maker” and “the Bionic Fish”) eyed coho eggs were planted in small tributaries in the Coos River watershed then monitored for swim up fry and later on returning adults. We are actively supporting tribal endeavors to rebuild decimated salmon runs using various life stages for generating more fry in underutilized watersheds. Egg Planters have been supplied to the Nez Perce Tribe in northern Idaho, California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Nome Highschool in Nome, Alaska.

Redd Zone provided non-motorized egg planters for the Arizona and New Mexico Departments of Fish and Wildlife to plant eyed eggs in national parks. Eggs were backpacked into remote areas and planted to rejuvenate Gila.
